My friend Jim came over to my house the other day and mentioned he had been hearing a lot about a supplement called CBD oil and that a mutual friend had said we had found CBD products we were quite impressed with.  He asked, “So, what is CBD oil?  Do you know much about it?”

I said, “A little.”  (Actually I knew quite a bit, but did not want to sound too overwhelming.)  I asked, “What do you want to know?”

“Well,” Jim asked, “what is the CBD definition, and what does CBD oil do?”

I explained that CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and the CBD oil we recommend comes from the hemp plant.  He said, “Oh, so it’s marijuana, right?”  I answered, “No, actually it’s not marijuana.

“The main difference between the two is the psychological effect.  Marijuana is a psychoactive plant, and can be used to get high.  Hemp is not psychoactive, so people who take CBD oil from hemp will not feel high.”

“That’s great news,” Jim said, “because I like what I’ve heard about the health benefits of CBD, but I need to be able to get through my day thinking clearly, and I don’t want to feel high.”

Hemp vs. Marijuana | What is CBD vs THC?

I explained that while the hemp and marijuana plants are both in the Cannabis family, the genetics and natural chemical composition between the two plants is different.  The plants are different, they are grown differently, and they are used differently.

I told Jim that CBD is just one of the many cannabinoids in cannabis plants.  The cannabinoid that causes the psychoactive effect, which causes people to feel high, is called THC (for more info on cannabinoids, see this Wikipedia article).

But the important thing for him to know is that hemp plants produce more a lot more CBD than THC (hemp plants only contain up to 0.3% THC) and marijuana plants produce more THC than CBD (marijuana plants contain 5-30% THC), which is why marijuana has a psychoactive effect.  There are some strains of marijuana that are high in CBD (for example, you may have heard how much the strain called Charlotte’s Web has helped with seizures), but there is still a fairly significant amount of THC in these strains as well.

What is CBD Oil used for?

I went on to explain that the big benefit that CBD research is showing is that it has an extraordinary way of reducing inflammation.  Because it has no psychoactive effects, it is legal in all 50 states in the U.S., in Canada and in over 200 countries.
Jim replied with an “Oh” with a puzzled look on his face.  I said, “It looks like you have a few more questions. Yes?”
Jim said, “OK, I get the difference between CBD and THC, but you mentioned CBD reduces inflammation.  Do you mean like inflammation with a sprained ankle?”
“Well that is an example of inflammation from an injury,” I said, “but CBD is used for more for inflammatory diseases.”  Jim said, “I never heard of inflammation as a disease before. Tell me what you mean by an ‘inflammatory disease’.”

“You may never have heard these health issues identified that way,” I said, “but I am sure you have heard of some of these.”

I pulled out a list of chronic inflammatory diseases and showed Jim.  He mentioned that he heard of all most all of them but wasn’t totally sure what the symptoms of some of them were.  Here is the list I showed him:

Inflammatory Diseases

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Pain Syndromes
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Hypertension
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Epilepsy
  • Mental Illness
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • COPD
  • Diabetes
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Alzheimer's
  • Parkinson's
  • Lupus
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Psoriasis
He said, “So CBD can cure all of these diseases?”  I had to remind him that I was not a doctor, nor did I ever play one on TV, and I told him that the FDA has strict guidelines what we can say about specific results people receive from CBD.
I recommended he go to https://pubmed.gov, which is a trusted repository that collects all sorts of medical research, and search for CBD and inflammation (the last time I searched on “CBD Inflammation” there were over 200 research articles on this subject).

How does CBD work?

What is CBD Oil - BenefitsJim’s final question was about how CBD works.  “You’ve answered my ‘What is CBD oil?’ question,” he said,  “but can you tell me how it actually works?”

“Like many of the mysteries of our human body,” I answered, “this is on the list.  But I can tell you what I know.”  And here is what I told him about:

We know our bodies have various systems, such as the circulatory system, digestive system, endocrine system and lymphatic system, to name a few.  And we know keeping these systems supported helps us keep our bodies healthy and vibrant.

But a system that is coming more and more into the spotlight is the Endocannabinoid System, as medical research is discovering its importance.  This system has receptors for cannabinoids that are in our brain, immune system and digestive system.

We have these receptors because our bodies are supposed to naturally produce cannabinoids.  And when we ingest a good, healthy organic CBD oil in our bodies, like the one we are recommending, it is introduced to these receptors in the body and can be delivered to the areas in need.  Also, CBD is fat soluble, so putting it in oil allows our body to utilize more of it.  When we learned this, it helped us to understand why people and animals were seeing so many benefits with this CBD oil, the CBD dog treats and our CBD creams.
Jim said, “You sure know a lot about this CBD stuff.”
I told Jim my wife and I started to hear about how important CBD can be for our health some time ago, when we were asking the “What is CBD Oil” question, and when we found HempWorx, and discovered how pure and potent the products were, we decided to hang up a shingle and be in the CBD business.
If you would like some information on the business aspect of HempWorx Affiliate Program, I invite you to go to the personal CBD website that HempWorx put together for us, and pre-enroll in for free and take a free tour.
Jim said that he was not ready to be in the CBD business yet, but would like to purchase some CBD oil to see how it works for him.  “Sure thing,” I said, and showed him how to shop for products on the SHOP FOR PRODUCTS website HempWorx built for us, and helped him make his product choices.
